Food Waste

Recycle Your Food Waste

During November and December 2009 a new Food Recycling Scheme is being rolled out across the Borough. Up until now food waste has gone directly into your black bin, but you will now be able to recycle food waste by putting it into your brown bin. Each household will soon receive a kitchen caddy, a supply of bio-degradable liners and a leaflet explaining how the scheme works. We expect every household to have received a caddy, etc. by the end of December 2009.

Please do not put food waste into your brown bin until you have received a caddy and liners.

Around 40% of the rubbish in an average grey bin will be food waste - scraps of leftover meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, pasta, cheese. Instead of rotting in landfill sites and generating large amounts of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, food waste can now also be turned into compost along with your garden waste, shredded paper and ashes.

What can I put in my brown bin?

All this material will be composted.
