State Line Plaque
Location: Larne Harbour terminal
In the 19th century emigrant vessels of the State Line, so named because the ship's were named after American states, called at Larne, providing a transatlantic link with New York.
The ships were often en route from Glasgow and those which called at the port included the State of Louisiana, State of Nebraska and State of Alabama. The memorial plaque is sited inside the modern harbour terminal at Larne, and notes that the final occasion on which one of the vessels called was in the last years of the 19th century. The State of Louisiana actually foundered at the Maidens Rocks, off Larne, in 1878. Divers can still view a section of her sitting on a shelf of rock.
