Ballycarry
Ballycarry is a village which can trace its roots back 1000 years to an early ecclesiastical settlement. The foundation of Teambul Corra was most probably a college or library since its ancient name suggests a 'Temple of Learning.'
A trail outlining important graves relating to the village history and the wider history of Ulster takes the visitor through Templecorran Cemetary, part of the original ecclesiastical site. Buried in the site is Rev. Edward Brice who was the Scots minister who first brought Presbyterianism in Ulster with his congregation in Ballycarry. The most imposing monument is a memorial to James Orr, the Bard of Ballycarry, a weaver poet who took part in the ill-fated United Irish Rising of 1798. Orr's poetry has been compared to that of Robert Burns and his work is often quoted in conjunction with the Ulster Scots language movement.
The historical links within the village are celebrated each September in the 'Broadisland Gathering', a weekend of pageantry and music, celebrating the Ulster Scots heritage of the area.
