Bird Watching
The mudflats of Larne Lough are a haven for birdwatchers and Swan Island in the centre of the Lough is internationally recognised for its importance as a nesting site, particularly for the rare Roseate Tern. Swan Island is one of seven areas of Northern Ireland with a SPA (Special Protection Area) classification. Larne Lough has also been designated as an area of Special Scientific Interest and an International RAMSAR site.
One hundred and thirty seven species of birds have been recorded on Islandmagee, including grebes, cormorants, wildfowl, waders, gulls and terns.
A bird observatory is available at Ford Farm and boat charter is available for those wishing to view the sea birds on the Gobbins cliffs and the bird sanctuary of Muck Island.
