Trade Waste

Larne Borough Council provides a trade waste collection service in Larne Town on Mondays and Thursdays.  Outlying collections in Glenarm, Carnlough and the North of the Borough are collected on Tuesdays and outlying collections in Islandmagee, Ballycarry and the South of the Borough are lifted on Thursdays.

For Trade Waste collection prices and Bin purchase prices for 2013/14 see Document attached at bottom of page.

Waste disposal costs have increased steadily over the past decade and are largely outside Council control.  The current disposal cost and landfill tax rate is £91 per tonne for waste.  Council continually reviews the efficiency of the collection service in consultation with traders.  The resultant efficiency savings have assisted in stabilising collection costs close to the rate of inflation.

Council introduced a prepaid label scheme in 2003.  Traders are encouraged to have the labels for each new quarter in place prior to the first collection day.  Bins without labels create uncertainty and may result in the suspension of your collection.  Prepaid labels may be purchased for between one and four quarters up until 31st March 2014.

Waste Minimisation

Council is committed to continually review its service to traders to assist them in minimising waste and will seek to introduce new recycling services wherever possible.  Council would encourage traders to take every opportunity to minimise their waste, including influencing their suppliers to reduce packaging material.

Recycling

Council owned 240lt blue bins are available for plastic bottles, cardboard, cans and waste paper.  These recycling bins are available for collection fortnightly.  Council owned brown bins are available for weekly glass collection.

Cardboard and glass can be delivered free of charge to any of Council’s three recycling centres:-

Redlands Recycling Centre, Harbour Highway, Larne

Glenarm Recycling Centre, Dickeystown Road, Glenarm

Larne South Recycling Centre, Island Road Lower, Ballycarry

Alternatively, traders can present their cardboard for collection on Thursdays.  Cardboard tape can be purchased at the Council Offices, Smiley Buildings, Victoria Road and used to tape around flat packed cardboard to cover its collection cost.

Council will be pleased to enter into a prepayment scheme for traders which will allow for the deposition of green waste or wood at any of the recycling centres.  A prepaid ticket can be purchased at the Council Offices, Smiley Buildings at a rate of £45 per tonne for wood and £60 per tonne for green waste.  The tonnage deposited during each site visit is aggregated until one tonne total has been reached.

Waste types other than those mentioned above cannot be taken to recycling centres. Construction, demolition and certain other waste types are not included in this scheme.

Further information and assistance on waste minimisation or recycling may be obtained by contacting Barry Tapster, Environment Education Officer on 028 2826 2307, or by e-mail, tapsterb@larne.gov.uk

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Council charge for waste collection when traders already pay rates?

Government changed the law in 1992 and required District Councils to charge for the collection and disposal of commercial waste.  The reasons for the changes in law were stated by the Government to include:-

  • Traders would have a clear perception of the cost of the service that they use;
  • Traders would have a choice and influence over the services they wished Council to provide;
  • Direct charging would have benefits in terms of efficiency;
  • Traders would have a choice of whether to pay for and use the Council services.

How are the Council trade charges set?

Council is tasked by Government to set reasonable charges for waste collection and disposal that should be realistic and also have a direct relationship with the cost of providing the service.

Why has Council introduced a pre-paid trade collection scheme?

The Local Government Auditor has advised Council to introduce a system of prepayment in advance in line with common practice in other District Councils.  Council introduced the prepayment service from October 2003.
