Occupational Health and Safety
We aim to secure the health, safety and welfare of persons at work and others affected by work activities.
We:
Inspect premises to ensure a satisfactory standard of health and safety is maintained.
Investigate complaints regarding working conditions and practices.
Investigate accidents at work.
Provide information and advice to businesses.
We are responsible for health and safety matters in offices, shops, warehouses, restaurants, public houses, hotels, cinemas, theatres, builders merchants, tyre and exhaust fitting centres, sports clubs, gyms and swimming pools, undertakers, churches, pet shops, kennels and animal breeders and anywhere that 'Special Treatments' are carried out (ear piercing, tattooing, acupuncture and electrolysis).
It is a legal requirement to report certain types of work-related accidents, diseases and dangerous occurrences which occur in any of the above type of premises to Larne Borough Council. These include:
Work related death or major injury
Members of the public killed or taken to hospital
Injuries to an employee or self employed person resulting in being unable to do normal work for more than 3 days
Dangerous occurrence which does not result in a reportable injury but clearly could have done
Notification from a doctor that an employee suffers from a specified work
related disease
The Health and Safety Executive are responsible for Health and Safety matters in other types of premises and accidents and incidents in such premises are reportable to them.

European Campaign on Risk Assessments
Healthy Workplaces : Good For You, Good For Business
Healthy Workplaces is a two-year campaign which aims to promote a management approach to risk assessment. See document below.
Young Workers
Young people (between 16-18 yrs old) have been identified as a particularly vulnerable group. Young workers are inexperienced, unaware of health and safety risks and may be physically or mentally immature. The Powerpoint presentation accessible from below can be used by teachers or employers to inform or raise awareness of health and safety risks to young workers.
