Small Steps to Healthier Choices
Healthier Choices at your local takeaway
“Small Steps to Healthier Choices” is the result of the successful pilot which ran since the start of September 2009, and 150 fast-food outlets across nine Council areas are taking part in the ground-breaking project.
Larne Council is one of 9 Councils running the project involving more than 150 takeaway premises.
It aims to provide you with a range of healthier options, which will continue to be available after the trial period finishes at the end of October 2009.
As the name suggests, the changes made will be small and you may not even be aware that any change has occurred. Longer term however, these small steps have the potential
to positively impact on your health.
These changes are ‘small steps’such as:
- new menu choices, e.g. salad bowls;
- alternative ingredients and products e.g. low fat and higher fibre options
- healthier preparation and cooking methods e.g. chunkier chips
Takeaway meals form a substantial part of the UK diet. However, they often contain a disproportionate amount of saturated fat and salt and are therefore recognised as making a significant contribution to the rising levels of obesity in the UK.
According to the National Food Survey in 2005, 1 in 4 people in Northern Ireland eat out more often than not during the week. In addition, fish and chip shops and Chinese restaurants were found to be used most frequently across Northern Ireland for takeaway meals.

Participating Premises
The project was officially launched in November 2009 simultaneously across all the participating Council areas.
The eight participating takeaways in the Larne Council area are:
- Duos, High Street, Larne
- Kennedys, Old Glenarm Road, Larne
- The Galley, Harbour Road, Carnlough
- The Hillstop, Upper Cairncastle Road, Larne
