American Forces Plaque 3
Location: Curran Road, Larne (close to the Curran Park)
Noting the important role played by Northern Ireland during the Second World War, this plaque, sited in the vicinity of an American army camp at Baylands, commemorates the men of the U.S. Army Northern Ireland Force (U.S.N.I.F.) and those of the VIII US Army Air Force who arrived in the province from January 1942.
In May 1942, for example, the 1st US Armoured Division arrived at Larne, while squadron members of the 52nd (US) Pursuit Group also disembarked at the port en route to their bases. The plaque remembers all those who trained in Ulster for victory in Europe, and was unveiled by the-then US Consul Valentino Martinez.
