Judge Richard Campbell Plaque

Richard Campbell was born at Deerpark, Glenarm. He was the son of Felix Campbell the Master of Feystown National School. The area so familiar to his father is a beautiful part of the Larne Borough, and the siting of the plaque highlights another area of outstanding natural beauty, the hills of Sallagh.
The future Judge Campbell emigrated while in his teens and became a newspaper reporter in New York, then Philadelphia and Washington. He afterwards studied law and embarked on a brilliant career in the judiciary. In 1902 he was appointed assistant to the Attorney General of the Phillipines, and would rise to the position of a judge of the Supreme Court of the Phillipines.
Among his friends in the government of his time was Theodore Roosevelt, the President with ancestral connections to the Gleno Valley, and it was well-known that anyone from his native land could expect a warm welcome from him. In 1921 he came back to Deerpark and a Gaelic Athletic event was staged in his honour at Glenarm.
